Farnham
Carnival - Myths
and Legends
Farnham Carnival has been a feature
of the town's summer scene for
several decades. Organised now
by two Farnham "Service"
Clubs, The Lions and The Hedgehogs,
the objective remains to provide
an event in which the community
can participate and which they
can enjoy. Any money made, over
and above expenses, has been welcomed
and used wisely for local charitable
causes, but this has never been
the driving force. Above all,
we have encouraged the youth of
the town to take a leading part
in the festivities.
Carnival procession -
6pm from the Hart Car
Park
The Procession assembles in the
Upper Hart Car Park from about
4pm. Judging takes place between
4.45pm and 6 pm. Following this,
the procession commences on its
route through Farnham, progressing
down The Hart and West Street
towards the Borough, around Woolmead,
down South Street, along Union
Road, up Downing Street then back
along West Street to the Upper
Hart Car Park. This usually takes
about an hour or so, depending
on the number of floats.
Castle Street Fayre -
2pm to 9pm
On Carnival Day the street is
usually closed to traffic from
Noon until Midnight. From quite
early morning until 2 p.m. the
organisers can be seen frantically
setting up the infrastructure
for the Fayre, running power cables,
marking out stall positions, erecting
the Entertainment area and, from
Noon, trying to clear the street
of parked cars. This last activity
is critical since the parking
spaces are allocated to stalls,
etc. Stalls, Toilets, Barriers,
Tables and Chairs have to be delivered
into the street at the earliest
practical opportunity and erected
once the traffic flow has ceased.
Stallholders are permitted to
commence laying out their wares
after 1 p.m.
Live entertainment and music.
Side stalls, bar and food.
