Farnham is an old
English market town with narrow
streets lined with some of the finest
Georgian architecture in the south
of England with a parish church
and castle dating back to the 12th
Century. Despite its thousand-year
history, the majority of Farnham's
architecture dates from the eighteenth
century, when the town enjoyed a
boom period based on hop farming.
It is home to Surrey's only intact
castle, built in 1158 by Henry de
Blois, Bishop of Winchester, as
a convenient residence halfway between
his diocese and London. The castle
was continuously occupied until
1927, but now houses a conference
venue. The steps leading down from
the castle, the Blind Bishop's Steps
were constructed for Bishop Fox
.The Bishops of Winchester lived
in the palace until the 1920s. Its
keep from where there are good views
over Farnham's red-tile roofs to
the Downs beyond, is the only part
open to the public. It has a well
shaft excavated from an earlier
Saxon structure. Farnham's refined
Georgian dwellings are at their
best along the broad Castle Street,
which links the town centre with
the castle.
Farnham also has an abundance of
opportunities for shopping, eating
out and sightseeing, or just relaxing
in beautiful gardens and flower
filled yards.
Farnham is an ideal centre for
exploring the surrounding countryside
with it gentle hills, rivers, leafy
lanes, historic buildings and picturesque
villages.
